Curve of success pointing upwards on Salzburgring
We were very excited how the enhancements of the BMW S 1000 RR would work on the Salzburgring and our new setup did not abandon us!
The track in the valleys of Salzburg is very fast thus optimally suited for the BMW. This we knew since 2009 when team Alfa Technik won the first IDM Superbike race on a S 1000 RR... However we really had to minimize the distance to the pole position.. and that's what we did!
Philipp Hafeneger came to the Salzburgring in a good temper. He likes the track! Our team of technicians and their chief Burkhard Stember were well equipped with ideas and changes to move the S 1000 RR closer to one of the first positions!
Our second rider, Irek Sikura had big plans for the weekend. He also enlisted for the Superbike race in the Adria Cup in Bratislava....!
So Irek did one training and one race and gathered some new experiences but unfortunately was not yet able to profit from our new developments.. Thus Philipp Hafeneger did it alone!
Right from the start on Friday he realized that his bike had more grip and that he was able to keep the track with less effort. On the other hand he found out that his competitors had also been busy! Philipp was able to achieve a 10th position during qualifying on Saturday by following world champion Karl Muggeridge in his slipstream.
After Muggeridge slipped Philipp had to brake hard. The fall was pre-programmed... nothing big happened besides a time loss due to the necessary repair in the box!
With very small deficit he started the 13th only to score a good 8th position in the second race.. The curve points upwards!
"The air is getting very thin" professional boxer Vladimir Klitschko recently said - the same is true with IDM Superbike! Philipp only had 0.8 seconds deficit to winner Werner Deamen who races on the Alfa BMW. Things are looking up!
In the next race, August 1st in Schleiz, our Irek Sikora hopefully is also going to profit from the new developments Philipp used on the Salzburgring!
Our goal still is to constantly ride among the first 8 of the championship. However this goal never had been harder to reach than in this season.. Nonetheless the BMW gives us hope!
With best regards from Nordhorn
